Where Is the Doge's Palace? Address and Entrance

The Doge's Palace (Palazzo Ducale) is in the heart of Venice, on the edge of St. Mark's Square and facing the lagoon. The official address is San Marco 1, 30124 Venezia. The public entrance for visitors is at the Porta del Frumento (Gate of Wheat), on the Piazzetta San Marco—the smaller square between the two columns (with the Lion of St. Mark and St. Theodore) and the waterfront. When you stand with your back to the lagoon, the Doge's Palace is on your left; the entrance is on the side of the building that faces the Piazzetta. Do not confuse it with the main ceremonial entrance (Porta della Carta), which is used for special occasions. For ticket collection or guided tours, follow the signs and any instructions on your booking confirmation.

How to Get to the Doge's Palace by Vaporetto

Venice has no cars; the main public transport on water is the vaporetto (water bus). To reach the Doge's Palace and St. Mark's Square:

  • From Piazzale Roma (car park / bus terminal): Take Line 1 to Vallaresso or San Zaccaria; Line 2 to Giardinetti; or Line 5.1 / 4.1 to San Zaccaria.
  • From Santa Lucia railway station: Same as above—Line 1 to Vallaresso or San Zaccaria; Line 2 to Giardinetti; Line 5.1 or 4.1 to San Zaccaria.
  • From Lido di Venezia: Line 1 to Vallaresso or San Zaccaria; or Line 5.2 to San Zaccaria.

From Vallaresso or San Zaccaria you can walk to the Piazzetta in a few minutes. From Giardinetti you are also close to the square. Timetables and line maps are available from ACTV (actv.it). Other services such as Alilaguna (airport boats) and private water taxis also stop near St. Mark's.

Walking to the Doge's Palace

If you are already in the historic centre, you can walk to the Doge's Palace. From the Rialto Bridge, head south towards St. Mark's Square (about 15–20 minutes depending on pace and crowds). From the Accademia bridge, walk east towards the square. The palace is unmistakable: a large Gothic building with a white and pink facade, next to St. Mark's Basilica. Once in the Piazzetta, look for the Porta del Frumento on the palace side; that is where you queue for security and entry with your Doge's Palace tickets.

Map and Landmarks

On a map of Venice, the Doge's Palace sits at the eastern end of the city, adjacent to St. Mark's Basilica and the Campanile. The building forms one side of the Piazzetta and connects to the Basilica. Behind it is the Bridge of Sighs, which links the palace to the historic prisons. Nearby landmarks include the Correr Museum (entrance on the opposite side of the square), the Marciana Library, and the waterfront (Molo). Using “Palazzo Ducale” or “Doge's Palace” and “San Marco 1” in a map app will usually take you to the right area; then follow signs for the visitor entrance (Porta del Frumento).

Practical Tips for Your Arrival

Allow extra time to reach the Doge's Palace in peak season—vaporetti and streets can be crowded. If you have a reserved time slot, plan to arrive at least 10–15 minutes early. Large bags and luggage must be left at the cloakroom; the entrance is through security. The Piazzetta can be very busy; keep your belongings secure. For the latest on accessibility and entrance arrangements, check the official Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia website.
