Secret Itineraries Tour – Behind the Scenes of the Doge's Palace
The Secret Itineraries tour of the Doge's Palace in Venice takes you into rooms and corridors that are not on the standard visitor route. Led by a qualified guide, you discover where the Republic’s administration and justice worked: from the dark prison cells (Pozzi) to the Piombi (including the cell linked to Giacomo Casanova), the Chancellery, the Torture Chamber, and the rooms of the Council of Ten and the Inquisitors. It is one of the most popular special experiences at the palace and has limited capacity, so booking in advance is essential. This page explains what the tour covers, ticket prices, and how to book.
What You See on the Secret Itineraries Tour
The tour starts in the courtyard and enters through a narrow door to the Pozzi (the “wells”)—damp, dark cells used for detention. You then climb to the offices of the Ducal Notary and the Deputato alla Segreta, the Great Chancellor’s office, and the Chamber of the Secret Chancellery. The route continues to the Torture Chamber, where interrogations were held (the rope was the main instrument). From there you reach the Piombi (named after the lead roof): cells for prisoners of the Council of Ten, often political. Casanova was held here; the cells associated with him are part of the tour. You then pass under the roof to the attic and descend to the Chamber of the Inquisitors and the Chamber of the Three Head Magistrates. The tour gives a strong sense of how justice and secrecy worked in the Venetian Republic.
